Here is my latest video on a number of N20 gear motors for use with RC tractors and RC excavators. The motors I look at have a gear ratio of 1:50, 1:100, 1:150 and 1:200. If you've any questions I'll be glad to answer them.

I'm just starting my first build and really have no clue where to start with the drive motor. Where would you start with a motor for a 1:16 scale tractor?

I've no experience at that scale myself but I'd use 1:14 scale truck parts as they should be geared around the right speeds for a tractor. You should be able to find a drive motor, gearbox, differentials and anything else you need even sound boards. Something like these parts www.rigidrc.com/shop/13--truck . That would be an expensive way to do it but would probably be a real nice model when you're done. Also 4 wheel drive would be tricky if the tractors front tires are smaller than the rears as the donor truck would have equally sized wheels. A cheaper way might be to put an N20 gearmotor on each wheel and program the speed difference between front and rear yourself but it would be tricky. Another way if you want to keep costs down for your first build might be to only drive the rear wheels and use a motor like the yellow one in this video around 9:40 mins in . It seemed pretty strong and is like 6 dollars I think, if you got that working you could try something more complex on a later build.

Well I bought some tamiya motors last last night. More or less knowing that they plastic gears won't be the best for this application. I'm hoping that they will at least help learn a little with fitting the motors. I do have another question this time on a speed controller do I have to have one for the tractor? I'm really new with this small electronics stuff so sorry if any questions seem stupid. I'm the type of person that once I have a completed product in my hands I can spin it from there.

I like tamiya motors but like you say it's a pity they don't sell them with metal gears, they'd be ideal if they did. You will need some kind of electronic speed controller but it depends on how you're going to control your tractor, if you are using off the shelf RC transmitters and receivers then you'll easily find a cheap RC ESC to do the job on ebay. That's not a stupid question, this stuff isn't straight forward if you use off the shelf RC parts and its worse if you start using Arduino's like me

What does N20 mean or refer to?

I think it's just the end of the serial number of the motor, not the gearbox but it's printed on some of the motors so I'd guess the first ebay seller called the combined motor/gearbox an n20 motor because it was printed on the motor and that's what they all do now. I'm just guessing though.
