Hello, I am curious if anyone knows of a way to convert an rc airplane controller to work for an RC truck that i want to build. I don't know if this applies to all airplane controllers but the throttle stick is centered and when I pull back it only slows down the motors, there is no reverse. And also, there is no motor control on the tail so the left/ right turning control only supplies more power to one of the motors. (meaning that when I push the stick right it gives the left motor more power, causing the plane to turn) I also would prefer to use the existing hardware from the plane itself and just somehow re-wire it so it can fit in a truck chassis. If not, that is ok but i would still like to use the controller. Thanks!

Hi,
I think your receiver not your controller is limiting the functionality of your model. I would guess the receiver has built in motor drivers to control each motor because I have an RC helicopter with a similar type of receiver. I think the simplest thing would be to get a receiver that matches your controller and has all servo outputs which you can put an ESC to drive your truck motor or whatever functions you need.
I'm no RC hardware expert so maybe someone else would have a better suggestion. Maybe if you have the model numbers of the controller and receiver it might help too.

I'm sorry if I ask stupid questions, I'm still very new to all of this. If I were to buy a new 3 channel receiver and crystals that matched on both the transmitter and receiver, would it work? Or would the controller still transmit a neutral signal rather than a reverse. Also, could I replace the esc with a car one so that it would have a reverse channel?
I don't know if I am making sense right now but thank you!

I'm definitely no expert in standard RC gear but I think it would work. I think the controllers all sends the same basic PWM signal and the only change is how the receiver interprets that signal, the receiver you have now translates it into neutral to full forward and a different one might translate it into full reverse to full forward. Is the ESC separate from the receiver in your plane? Something like this If it is then you might just need to switch it to one of the servo ports for the wings or tail and you might get the control you need.

ello Salty Did you get the answer you needed? I've been working on the same problem. What the tractor guy is saying is you need a reversing motor speed controller to plug into the receiver. Another way is to use a twin latching relay to get reverse using your existing speed control. The reversing ESC's I have found so far are to big and expensive. I have a twin latching relay on the way, hopefully. Another way is to have a servo throw a switch to get reverse. I am new to this so I hope I am not confusing the issue. Let us know how you make out
